Last Friday (11th January 2013) saw the first of the Ian Dickson business planning workshops sponsored by Orange Pixel. A fantastic day and very inspiring to be in a room full of people passionate about their businesses and passionate about making 2013 a remarkable year.
These days it’s all too easy to get bogged down in the doom and gloom pumped out by the popular press and even easier to use that as a reason for not taking action! Everyone in the room is now on course to take positive meaningful action.

Workshop not Seminar
It’s important to note that the day was a workshop not a seminar so once Ian had introduced each topic and explained what we were to do that was it – heads down and thinking, writing and working our way towards the workshop objectives with Ian facilitating all the way.
The days topics were split into two halves, the morning was all about our HUGS (Huge Unbelievable Goals) for 2013 and the afternoon about creating a marketing plan to support and reach those goals.
We started by completing our “business wheel” – a benchmark of the current state of 7 main areas of your business, the premise being “how will you know how much you’ve improved if you don’t know where you started from?”
Next we moved on to the Goals. The process here was to write down 4 or 5 big business goals to have achieved by the end of 2013. Then we split the year into 3 month chunks, estimated progress towards those goals and then a top level action plan for moving towards the main goals.
The final part was to create our Magic Numbers – you’ll have to come along to the next one to find out what they’re all about!
After a spot of lunch the afternoon session was all about putting some flesh around the action plans of the morning and coming up with a set of actionable commitments designed to move our businesses forward in 4 key areas – Money, Time, Test & Measure and Marketing.
Finally we created a list of measurable marketing activities to happen each month for the next 3 months with the aim of delivering the leads that we need, by month, to help towards the morning’s HUGS.

This isn’t a wishy washy “How to make your millions” seminar – it’s real world, tried and tested practical methods to help you achieve your business goals (of course the same can be applied to personal goals but that’s probably for another blog article!).
