After a website goes live I make a point of reminding our customers about the benefits of Blogging regularly.  To let Google know that you have an active website you need to be making changes to it very often.  Since there is a limit to how often you can rewrite your core services or your welcome paragraph the best way of doing this is to add a blog.  One of the main benefits of writing these articles is that you really get to target and include your keywords.  In our case I know that one of the key phrases that people use to find us is web design hampshire. Therefore I tend to use it in an article (I also use that phrase a few times on the Orange Pixel homepage!).

Additionally however a blog is also a great opportunity to write articles that target alternative terms that people may use to find your particular service or product.  Again, using our experience as an example, we may write articles to cover the possibility that people are typing in wordpress web designers in hampshire or a more local search like web design portsmouth.

In short your blog is your chance to let people know that you are an expert in your field.

To be clear the word Blog sounds scary to newcomers but can easily be replaced by News or Articles or Updates or pretty much anything you like.  The thing that defines it is a regularly updated area of your website containing an overview of articles with a link to click through and read the whole thing.

How long should a blog be?

I always aim for about 500 words but don’t be afraid to go up to 1000 words or more. If you have a lot to say and you think people will find it interesting then don’t hold back.  If you arent a very wordy person then go as low as 300 words. To the end of the last sentence this article was 322 words so it’s not that much to write.

How often should I blog?

It is considered good practice to get one new piece on your website per week but there is a lot of evidence to say that the more you blog the more visitors you will get so if you can produce good content daily then do it!  The key is to make it good content, something that people might want to read.  If you can include links to an authoritative source then that can really help your article too. Blogging and Social Media

Another great benefit of blogging regularly is that it gives you some great content to push out to your preferred social media channels.  Simply add the link to your article to a status update on LinkedIn or Facebook, add a little comment and then post.  Your blog can reach a much wider audience this way and you are also then pulling people on to your website.

Always end your blog with some form of call to action so that people tdo know that you have a service or product on offer.  It’s not all Sell, Sell, Sell but if they are interested in your content there’s a fair chance they’ll be interested in your service too.
