WordPress 3.9 is released today and there are some great new design features to use on your websites.
Keeping the jazz greats alive with their version names the guys over at WordPress have given 3.9 the name “Smith” in honour of jazz organist Jimmy Smith and the main focus of the update seems to be on the visual (WYSIWYG) editor and especially the Media side of things.
The Visual Editor
As well as a ‘claimed’ improvement in speed there is better functionality in responsive design so you can administer your blog on the move.
In my opinion as a web designer this is a great leap for WordPress! More functionality in image editing straight from the visual editor has been a long time coming but it’s finally here.
You can now drag and drop your media straight into your post or page saving clicks and more importantly design time and once you have your image you’ll find quicker access to scaling, crop and rotation tools.
Since the introduction of the Gallery function there has been frustration because you can’t see what you have added but now there is a new gallery preview so you see a grid of images in your post just like you would on the live page.
Audio & Video
As images have galleries you can now add playlists of audio and video making WordPress an exciting prospect for musicians or band websites.
Not the end!
If you are as excited as I am about these latest updates then find out more from the video or head over to the WordPress site for more about it.
